Around and Way to me

Variety is the spice of life!

Today was the first rain free afternoon in 2wks so me and my crew enjoyed the afternoon hiking in the sun, out from under the old growth forest for a change!

Once home, I pulled out a few agility jumps and started polishing up our herding and agility directional cues "Around" and 'Way to me". If we can catch some more nice weather breaks, we'll be ready for fun matches this spring :)

What I love most about RM methods is when you teach your dog something new, whether it's finding an incompatible cue to counter an annoying behaviour (i.e. teaching quiet, instead of listening to your dog barking) or learning cues for sports like agility, rally-o, herding...teaching the behaviour happens within a few seconds to maybe a couple minutes when you understand how to capture, shape, use targeting and or luring (and fading asap). Generalizing the cue is the next fun part, and when done systematically, is quick as well.

"Around" and "Way to me" come in handy in everyday life. No fretting over wrapping a leash around a telephone pole, or yourself! Or if your dog is in the distance and you need them to go around a person, another dog, cat, biker...being able to let them know from a distance what needs to happen is helpful.

It looks like you all have been working really hard! Shaping has been one of the most fun things to learn. Once you and your dog are practiced at it, it becomes really easy as well. Good luck in the new year!
